Compact Digital Cameras Regain Popularity Among Youth | Release #191

According to a survey by the Cabinet Office, the ownership rate of digital cameras in Japanese households has dropped to 48.6%, falling below half for the first time in 19 years. This data excludes smartphones, indicating a sharp decline in the popularity of digital cameras. Such low figures have not been reported since 2004, the era when digital cameras began to become widespread.

Over the past 15 years, smartphones have completely dominated the compact camera market. Graphs show a continuous decline in digital camera usage from 2004 to 2019, while smartphone usage has surged. According to a report by the Nikkei newspaper, the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) of Japan states that domestic shipments of digital cameras have decreased from 11.11 million units in 2008 to 910,000 units currently, a decline of over 92% in 15 years.

Recently, compact digital cameras (compact cameras) have reportedly regained attention among young people. Retro designs and film camera-like features are gaining popularity, but this is only a small part of the overall market. In reality, the total sales of digital cameras continue to decline.

While the sales volume of digital cameras by each manufacturer is decreasing, this does not mean that revenue is declining.
