In Pursuit of Radiance | Photographer Gucci | ISSUE #32

Gucci is a photographer who pursues vividness and depth in color. Masterfully manipulating light and shadow, his works capture urban nightscapes with a unique expression of color, inviting viewers into a world filled with the brilliance of color and light.

Although his parents owned a camera, Gucci himself lived a life unrelated to photography. We asked him about the sudden start of his photography journey.

"It all began with an old camera I received from a friend," Gucci explains. This chance encounter sparked his passion for photography, and he now uses the Canon R7 as his main equipment, pursuing unique color expressions through retouching.

"Nightscapes possess a magical beauty that captivates the viewer's heart. I am particularly drawn to the night scenes of cities like Yokohama and Odaiba, which continue to shine through the night," Gucci captures the contrast between the brilliance of city lights and the tranquility of night. Each photograph invites viewers into a city filled with light.

"When photographing nightscapes, one must be extremely sensitive to the changes in light at every moment. Capturing that fleeting light is the key to creating impactful photographs," he shares his dedication to capturing the perfect shot.

His preference for the Canon R7 is also due to its excellent eye autofocus feature, which helps him not miss those moments.

"While the precision of camera technology is certainly important, what truly matters is how well you can capture the emotions you feel at that moment," Gucci emphasizes.

"When photographing nightscapes, I pay particular attention to the balance of light and composition," says Gucci. Finding the light he wants to emphasize among the myriad of lights and shadows in the nightscape and considering the composition is crucial, he explains. He often visits the same location multiple times to capture the unique beauty of the scene.

The city at night is shaped by each light, which determines the overall atmosphere of the photograph. He pursues the various expressions that the location shows under different times and weather conditions. Gucci's works express urban vitality through light and shadow.

When asked about his next steps as a photographer, Gucci says, "I would like to try portrait photography. I am interested in capturing people's expressions and the stories behind them."

His curiosity constantly leads him to new territories through photography.
