Canon's latest full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R5 Mark II, features a newly developed CMOS sensor with approximately 45 million effective pixels and the image engine "DIGIC X," achieving both high resolution and high-speed processing. With Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, it accurately detects and tracks subjects' eyes, faces, as well as animals and vehicles. Additionally, it includes up to 8.0 stops of in-body image stabilization and advanced AI-driven subject recognition AF, enabling more precise shooting.

I previously used the EOS R6 as my main camera, but I was drawn to the high resolution and subject tracking performance, so I acquired the EOS R5 Mark II. The price is by no means affordable, but it was a camera I had wanted since its announcement.

Though the power switch is in a different position, I have no resistance to its operability, and its moderate size and weight fit comfortably in my hand. In reality, when carrying it with lenses, a more compact body would be easier, but I still pack my gear into a large backpack and walk around.

I mainly enjoy photographing moving subjects like bullet trains. The subject tracking performance of the EOS R5 Mark II is very high, and it continues to keep focus even during dynamic photography, which is extremely helpful. The ability to express the colors I envision, thanks to the high-resolution sensor, is also an attractive feature.

The EOS R5 Mark II is equipped with an in-camera upscaling function that utilizes deep learning technology. It can convert the vertical and horizontal pixel count of captured JPEG or HEIF images to double, generating high-resolution images with approximately 167 million pixels. This function is very useful for reducing quality degradation after cropping.

For example, when a 500mm lens isn't close enough to the subject, you can use the upscaling function to increase resolution, allowing you to crop while maintaining image quality. Although cropping is often considered unconventional, it's a very handy feature when you can't achieve the desired framing.

Recently, I photographed the night view from Hanayagura Observatory in Yoshino, Nara, famous for cherry blossoms. At night, the distant Osaka night view emerges. Curious about what I could see, I used the upscaling function to zoom in and was able to identify Osaka Castle and Abeno Harukas.

At that time, I only had a 200mm lens, but I was surprised to capture the distant scenery so clearly.

There are still many functions I haven't mastered yet, but I feel that the EOS R5 Mark II is a masterpiece for me to aim for further improvement. I want to continue capturing many moments with this camera and broaden my range of expression.
