Meta is preparing to introduce a new feature called 'Peek' to Instagram, similar to the popular app BeReal. This new feature is designed to easily share realistic photos.
What is the Peek Feature?
'Peek' is a feature that allows you to take a photo and immediately share it with friends. Since photos taken with the in-app camera are posted directly, you cannot select images from your device's gallery or edit photos. This simple and realistic style is one of the reasons for BeReal's popularity.
Instagram's New Challenge Begins Quietly
Instagram is known for adopting features from competitors, such as 'Stories' from Snapchat and 'Reels' from TikTok. According to media outlet TechCrunch, they also tested a feature called 'Candid Stories' in 2022, which allowed simultaneous photo capture with the front and back cameras, similar to BeReal, but it was never officially released.
Once-Only Posting
Unlike BeReal or Candid Stories, 'Peek' does not have strict prompts regarding timing. However, 'Peek' posts can only be viewed once and then disappear. During the testing phase, it was known as 'Quick Snap' but is now referred to as 'Peek'.
The Appeal of One-Time Content
Why are social media platforms offering one-time content features?
The reason is to provide users with a real-time connection experience. One-time content encourages users not to miss 'this moment', and since the content disappears quickly, it creates a sense of specialness when viewed. Additionally, this format encourages users to share more natural and unedited everyday moments, enhancing trust and intimacy on the platform.
The Future of the New Feature is Uncertain
However, TikTok has already discontinued its BeReal-like feature 'TikTok Now', and BeReal itself is losing popularity. In this context, it is unclear whether Instagram will officially release 'Peek'. Nevertheless, the fact that Meta is testing this feature indicates a new strategy in the highly competitive social media market.
