Delve into the creativity and thoughts of creators worldwide with 'ISSUE'. A source of new inspiration. In 'ISSUE #30', we introduce Yoshihiko Sato, the official curator of the 'Cat Day' photo contest hosted by cizucu, who captures the theme of coexistence between humans and animals.

Mr. Sato, after working as a journalist for a newspaper and an executive in the IT industry, became independent and has made animal photography his life's work while deeply contemplating the coexistence of humans and animals.

From Newspaper to IT Industry and the Path of a Photographer

Mr. Sato's career began as a newspaper reporter. At that time, he used a film camera on the job, but his interest in photography did not deepen.

"I started by dabbling in programming and organizing internal data. With the advent of the internet, I sensed a transformation akin to the industrial revolution," he recalls as the reason for his career change.

After pursuing new possibilities and gaining experience at the newspaper, he transitioned to the IT industry and eventually became independent.

One day, while working on a website project, he faced a shortage of image materials. "I realized I was short on materials and started taking photos myself. This experience made me appreciate the convenience of digital cameras and the freedom of expression unimaginable in the film era."

This event reignited a long-nurtured passion deep within him.

Pursuing the Art of Cat Photography

Mr. Sato began photographing cats when he casually took a picture of his house cat with a digital camera.
He found it unexpectedly interesting and started to delve into cat photography, inspired by photo books and the works of animal photographer Mitsuaki Iwago.

"Lately, I've been using Sony's α9 almost exclusively," he says. In his photography, he focuses on shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, and autofocus settings to capture the dynamism of cats, constantly seeking to improve his techniques. "Even with the same cat, adjusting the metering settings or ISO based on the color and pattern of the face can result in better shots," he shares, revealing many behind-the-scenes stories of his photography.

"I am continuously researching autofocus settings, shutter speed, and ISO sensitivity when photographing fast-moving cats," he explains.

The Reality Witnessed on Cat Islands

Mr. Sato's passion for cat photography is not just about capturing beautiful images. Through his photography on cat islands, he has come to deeply consider the coexistence of humans and animals, recognizing the wonderful existence of animals.

For instance, during his visits to cat islands, he was surprised by the changes brought about by TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) activities. TNR is a method to prevent excessive breeding and support the healthy living of community cats.

"There used to be islands overflowing with cats, but now there are many where you hardly see any," he notes. However, as a result of TNR activities, Mr. Sato has observed a dramatic decrease in the number of cats on islands that were once bustling with them. While TNR activities aim to improve cat welfare, they can also be seen as human-centered population control. Mr. Sato holds complex feelings about this unresolved debate.

The coexistence of cats and humans, and the relationship between animals and humans, are reflected in animal photography.

"When photographing, I am reminded of the wonder of animals," says Mr. Sato, hoping that animal photography can inspire people.

He used to use cat toys to make cats jump for photos, but now he focuses on respecting animals in his photography. "I want to take photos from a perspective that respects animals, not just to capture amusing images," he says.
Recognizing the importance of respecting animals and putting thought into every action, even just pressing the shutter, is crucial.

Continuing to Contemplate the Future of Coexistence

Through photography, Mr. Sato seeks to explore and convey better ways for humans and animals to coexist. "I hope to provide a starting point for better coexistence," he expresses. He emphasizes the importance of investigating and understanding issues related to coexistence with cats and other animals from multiple perspectives rather than a single viewpoint.

"I don't think the answer will be easily found. However, it is important for those of us facing this issue to research and deepen our understanding, rather than blindly accepting others' words," says Mr. Sato.

Starting with photographing his house cat, his journey expanded to trips to cat islands. Mr. Sato's photos vividly capture the natural behavior and wild beauty of cats.
