Do you remember being fascinated by the unknown creatures in animal encyclopedias as a child? While barking dogs might be a bit scary, everyone loves the animals in the zoo, even if they are behind bars. However, just watching them from a distance can feel somewhat lonely.

Grab your camera and head outside to find animals! Whether it's a park or a mountain hike, Japan's rich nature is home to various animals. This time, we'll share various information you need to know to take the first step into animal photography.

The Relationship Between Photographer and Animal Seen Through Lens Selection

Whether it's wildlife or pets, 'animal photography' involves capturing moving subjects, making it challenging to frame them in the viewfinder and press the shutter. Unlike portraits, you can't ask animals to pose; they might run away if startled, but they won't greet you in human language. Especially when photographing wildlife, it's crucial to minimize the observer's presence to capture realistic wild scenes, often requiring the use of super telephoto lenses.

However, for animals accustomed to humans, like pets, getting closer with the lens might be a good approach. Just like with people, getting closer can reveal the relationship between the photographer and the animal. However, be mindful of flash and shutter noise. It's important to maintain a safe distance and avoid stressing the animals while enjoying the photography.

Essays by Michio Hoshino, the Photographer Traveling Through Timelessness

For those who want to seriously challenge wildlife photography, seeing is believing, and diving into the wild is a good start, but why not carry a book as a talisman? Learning from the journey of animal photographers and their feelings towards nature can sharpen your sensitivity for creating works.

The first photographer I recommend is Michio Hoshino. He documented and published the nature and people of Alaska through photos and writings. Capturing the brilliance of life, his encounters deepen your reflections.

For humans, wild animals live on a distant shore, with an endless darkness in between. Can there be moments where humans and wild bears connect across that darkness?
From 'Alaska: Eternal Life' (Shogakukan Bunko)

Are You a Cat Person or a Dog Person? Start with Animals Close to You

You don't need to make the first step into animal photography overly complicated with super telephoto lenses or diving into the wild. Start with the animals close to you. Pets accustomed to humans blend into human life, capturing relatable expressions in photos.

It doesn't have to be a National Geographic-worthy shot. Just point your lens at your adorable companions with ease.
