Creating Art from a 'Cosmic Perspective' - STAR SPHERE×Hiroshi Sugimoto | Release #20

From childhood, the word 'space' has always been associated with the unknown. However, we now find ourselves in an era where artists are capturing space and creating works of art.
Bringing Space Closer - Sony's Space Experience Project 'STAR SPHERE'
Sony's space experience project 'STAR SPHERE' aims to broadly provide a 'perspective from space', utilizing this viewpoint in various fields such as art, entertainment, and education to enrich daily life and the future of Earth, making space more accessible. This project is being developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the University of Tokyo.
Photography Using the Microsatellite 'EYE'
In 2023, Sony's microsatellite 'EYE', equipped with a camera, was launched aboard a SpaceX rocket. Through photos and videos of space and Earth captured by the satellite's camera, 'STAR SPHERE' aims to bring changes to everyday life, education, art, and entertainment. Currently, it orbits Earth approximately 16 times a day.
What Happens When All Humanity Gains a Cosmic Perspective?
As the first partner to utilize the 'cosmic perspective' in various fields of daily life, renowned contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, known for his precise photographic works and deep reflections on humanity and civilization, has been selected. Sugimoto is set to create artworks as the first user of the space camera equipped on 'EYE'.
With a theme of ruins enduring for 10,000 years, such as the Enoura Observatory, Sugimoto creates conceptual photographic works centered around the notions of 'time' and 'narrative'. It is intriguing to see what kind of works he will produce when faced with the transcendent world of space.
Dialogue Series Exploring the 'Cosmic Perspective', 'From Science to Imagination'
As preparation for creating artworks, a dialogue series exploring the 'cosmic perspective' has been released. In this series, set at the Enoura Observatory, Sugimoto, in preparation for creating works using the space camera, focuses on the theme 'From Science to Imagination', inviting experts from various fields to deeply explore the culture, art, civilization, and society that the 'cosmic perspective' is beginning to generate.
