Full-Frame Ultra-Wide AF Zoom Lens with Image Stabilization: RF10-20mm F4 L IS STM | Canon

2023-10-rf10-20-f4l-cover-image

Canon Inc. has announced a new ultra-wide zoom lens, the 'RF10-20mm F4 L IS STM', as part of the 'EOS R System' interchangeable lenses, 'RF lenses'. The release is scheduled for October 27, 2023. Pricing is open, with an estimated retail price of 376,200 yen (tax included).

This lens is the world's first ultra-wide zoom lens with a focal length of 10mm, excluding fisheye lenses, for 35mm full-frame compatible AF zoom lenses. It features an image stabilization mechanism and introduces 'Peripheral Coordinated Control' to suppress peripheral blur unique to wide angles for the first time.

Compared to the 'EF11-24mm F4L USM' for SLR cameras, introduced in December 2015, it not only expands the focal range on the wide-angle side but also achieves compactness and light weight while incorporating the image stabilization mechanism 'IS'.

Ultra-Wide Shooting from 10mm to 20mm

By achieving ultra-wide shooting with a focal length of 10mm, it is possible to capture wide shots in limited spaces or indoors, as well as dynamic perspectives in vast landscapes and celestial bodies. Additionally, covering up to a focal length of 20mm allows for high flexibility in photo and video expression, utilizing zoom. The effective arrangement of 12 groups and 16 elements in the lens corrects chromatic aberration across the zoom range, enabling high-quality images with minimal color fringing, suitable for various scenes.

Introduction of New Control Algorithm 'Peripheral Coordinated Control'

With the lens's optical image stabilization mechanism providing 5.0 stops, and in combination with the body image stabilization mechanism of EOS R series cameras, coordinated control is achieved, delivering a stabilization effect of 6.0 stops when mounted on the 'EOS R3' (released in November 2021).
Furthermore, it newly supports peripheral coordinated control to improve blur at the image periphery, characteristic of wide angles, enabling comfortable shooting even in scenes prone to camera shake, such as night photography.

Reliability Combined with Compact and Lightweight Design

The design leverages the large diameter and short back focus of the 'RF mount', along with the camera's distortion correction, achieving significant compactness and light weight. Compared to the 'EF11-24mm F4L USM', the weight is reduced from approximately 1,180g to about 570g, and the length is shortened from about 132mm to approximately 112mm. The adoption of dust and drip-proof construction in areas such as the mount, control ring, and focus ring ensures reliability unique to L lenses while maintaining a compact and lightweight design.
