Global Geoparks, where you can feel the grand history and natural activities of the Earth, are perfect subjects for creators. These regions, recognized for their global geological value, offer unique landscapes even within Japan.

This time, we introduce three regions from the ten Global Geoparks in Japan, explaining photography spots where you can rediscover the allure of nature and cameras.

What is a Global Geopark?

Global Geoparks are areas recognized by UNESCO, which also designates World Heritage sites, to protect and utilize Earth's history and natural environment. These areas feature unique landscapes formed by distinctive terrain and geology, with each location breathing life into Earth's history and culture.

For photographers, Geoparks are not just tourist destinations but canvases that reflect the grand story of the Earth. Through photography, you can capture Earth's long history and beauty in a single image.

Note: The term "Japan Geopark" refers to Geoparks designated by the Japan Geopark Committee, including 46 regions, among which 10 are Global Geoparks.

Lake Toya and Mount Usu (Hokkaido)

Located in Hokkaido, Lake Toya and Mount Usu offer a Geopark with grand landscapes born from volcanic activity. Here, you can enjoy the contrast between the majestic lake and volcano, capturing their seasonal expressions with your camera.

Particularly, Lake Toya shrouded in morning mist and the terrain marked by volcanic eruptions are recommended as dramatic subjects. Feel the power of nature and discover unique compositions and lighting to create impressive photographs.

Izu Peninsula (Shizuoka Prefecture)

The Izu Peninsula, located in Shizuoka Prefecture, is also known as a Geopark. Its unique terrain jutting into the sea and rock surfaces formed over long periods offer varied and attractive landscapes.
