The Charm of Reflection Photography
The rainy season is here. While it might feel a bit daunting to go out, taking your camera along can lead to capturing unique photos that are characteristic of this time of year. This time, we introduce how to capture enchanting reflections using rain puddles.
Photography Tips
Reflection creates a mirror-like effect by capturing subjects reflected on surfaces like water. Puddles, in particular, are excellent natural mirrors. After the rain, puddles beautifully reflect the sky, trees, and buildings. By skillfully capturing these reflections, ordinary scenes can become fantastically transformed.
Finding Puddles
After the rain, puddles can be found everywhere in the city. Wide roads and park paths are particularly prone to forming puddles. Choose a calm location to avoid ripples caused by wind.
Camera Settings
For reflection photography, an aperture setting of F8 to F11 is recommended to achieve a deep depth of field. Adjust the shutter speed according to the light, but on calm days, 1/125 second is usually sufficient. Keep the ISO sensitivity as low as possible to minimize noise, ideally between ISO100 and 400.
Shooting Angles and Composition
Bringing the camera close to the water surface makes the reflection more distinct. Consider crouching or placing the camera near the ground. Choose reflections of colorful subjects like blue skies, sunsets, or green trees.
Utilizing Weather
On cloudy days, the soft light provides uniform brightness, and clouds can create a dreamy effect when reflected. On sunny days, the strong sunlight increases contrast.
Leveraging Symmetry
Aiming for symmetry allows buildings and trees to be reflected symmetrically on the water surface, creating a painting-like beautiful symmetry effect. Placing green trees or red flowers beside a puddle reflecting the blue sky enhances color contrast.
How about trying it out?
Find a puddle and capture the world reflected in it with your camera. You might discover beautiful scenes you hadn't noticed before. Take your camera and head out to the city after the rain.
