Lessons from Winter Photography by fujikko | What I Learned | SONY α7 III | Knowledge #196
Creators who love photography share their stories with their cameras. The presence of a "beloved camera" reflects each person's life perspective and values. In this series, we feature fujikko, who loves using the SONY α7 III.
As winter arrives and the cold intensifies, going out can become a hassle. However, for photography enthusiasts, it's a special season of opportunities. fujikko shares insights and discoveries from winter photography experiences, as well as the beautiful moments unique to this season.
Basic Information on SONY α7 III
Equipped with an approximately 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor, it achieves a wide dynamic range and high sensitivity performance. With 693 phase-detection AF points covering about 93% of the image area and 425 contrast AF points, it enables fast and precise autofocus.
The standard ISO sensitivity supports up to 51,200, allowing for low-noise shooting even in low-light environments. Additionally, it features a 5-axis in-body image stabilization mechanism to effectively reduce blur during handheld shooting. Furthermore, it can shoot continuously at up to 10 frames per second with AF/AE tracking, capturing fast-moving subjects with ease.
The Charm of Subjects Highlighted by a Colorless Season
Winter is a season with subdued natural colors. There are no green or red leaves, and the plants rest quietly. However, this subdued color palette enhances clothing, expressions, and movements in portrait photography. The simplicity of the background allows the subject itself to stand out.
For example, a photo of my son taken during a winter camp is a striking image. Captured with a slightly curious expression as he gazes around near the blazing fire, the simplicity of the background conveys both the warmth of the flickering flames and the gentle expression on his face in the cold.
The simplicity of the background allows the charm of the subject to vividly emerge.
Additionally, the unique depiction of an old lens adds a rich atmosphere to the entire photo, beautifully capturing the winter air.
The Depth of Monochrome Photography Unique to Winter
A photo of a pine cone taken at the same winter camp and developed in monochrome also conveyed the expression of winter. By stripping away color, the shape and texture are emphasized, capturing the coldness and tranquility of winter itself. The unique expressiveness of monochrome highlights the beauty of winter and emphasizes the seasonal feel.
Handling Equipment with Care During Winter Photography
One must not forget about equipment handling during winter photography. Condensation, which occurs when returning from the cold outdoors to a warm indoor environment, is particularly concerning. It is important to use a dedicated dehumidifying bag or gradually ease the temperature change to prevent it from affecting the camera's interior.
Winter photography is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the insights and discoveries that can only be encountered in this season.
Why not enjoy capturing special moments with your camera amidst the clear and tranquil winter air?
