On October 9, 2024, Panasonic Corporation announced the latest firmware update for select LUMIX series models (DC-S9, DC-S5M2, DC-S5M2X, DC-G9M2).

This update enhances shooting and sharing capabilities, adding a variety of features to further unleash the creativity of camera users. This article explains the new features and update procedures.

Overview of New Features and Enhancements

The new firmware enhances features tailored to each model. Notably, the automatic recognition AF has been improved, with new recognition for 'airplanes' and 'trains'. Additionally, recognition for 'cars' and 'motorcycles' now allows for part selection, enabling more precise subject tracking.

Moreover, the DC-S9 now supports displaying up to three frames simultaneously, allowing frame confirmation in multiple aspect ratios. The update also includes a mode to remove the continuous recording time limit for video, greatly expanding shooting possibilities.

Enhancements in Sharing Features and App Integration

Integration with the LUMIX Lab app has been enhanced, enabling remote shutter functions via Bluetooth and remote operation from smartphones via Wi-Fi. Additionally, a feature to transfer captured images to the app for seamless posting to social media has been added.

This streamlines the workflow from shooting to sharing, broadening the creative expression of creators. Particularly for the DC-S5M2 and S5M2X, a high-contrast 'LEICA Monochrome' photo style has been added, along with a feature to easily create and apply LUTs from the smartphone app.

Firmware Update Procedure

The firmware update is performed as follows:

  1. Check Required Items:
    • Fully charged battery
    • Memory card formatted in the camera (such as an SD card)
  2. Download and Extract Firmware:
    • Download the firmware on a computer and extract it. The file format is '.bin' or '.plf'.
  3. Copy to Memory Card:
    • Copy the extracted file to the memory card.
  4. Update Operation:
    • Insert the memory card into the camera and turn it on.
    • Select 'Firmware Update' from the 'Setup Menu' and follow the instructions.


The firmware update takes about 3-5 minutes. Do not operate the camera during the update. Once the update is complete, the camera will restart automatically. Finally, verify that the version has been updated correctly to complete the process.
