The latest model in Panasonic's LUMIX S series, the 'LUMIX S5II (DC-S5M2)', was released on February 16, 2023. As an entry-level mirrorless camera with a compact body, it is often compared to Sony's 'α7 IV' and Canon's 'EOS R8'. This time, we bring you a direct review of the 'LUMIX S5II (DC-S5M2)' by photographer Kento Hirasue.
Why I Chose the 'LUMIX S5II (DC-S5M2)'
I initially searched for a camera suitable for video shooting. Compared to Sony cameras with similar specs, it is significantly cheaper, making it attractive for starting professional video shooting. The depiction is straightforward and easy to handle, and the transition from my previous Canon camera was smooth.
The 'Real-time LUT functionNote 1' is convenient, and the adoption of the L-mount in collaboration with Leica and Sigma offers promising lens asset management for the future. On a personal note, since my first camera was a LUMIX mirrorless, I feel a special attachment to it.
Note 1: A function that allows you to apply LUT during shooting and preview its effects immediately. LUT (Look-Up Table) is a tool for color correction and styling.

Stress-Free Portability and Excellent Operability
Its lightweight and compact design makes it comfortable to carry. The joystick allows for instant fine focus adjustments. While the genuine lenses are relatively large, the full-frame sensor ensures high image quality and a wide dynamic range. Noise is not a concern up to ISO6400, making it suitable for night shooting.

Enjoy Professional Shooting on a Budget
Compared to Canon cameras, it has slightly lower contrast and higher saturation, but this can be easily adjusted in post-processing. It features powerful image stabilization for video shooting, allowing stable handheld shooting. The V-log mode supports detailed color grading. Although the L-mount lens lineup is limited, using a mount adapter allows for detailed image creation.

Recommended for travel and everyday outings. It has a dedicated video shooting button and a vari-angle LCD for easy Vlog shooting. The image quality can be finely adjusted by color gradation and frame rate, and favorite modes can be custom registered.
It includes all the basic functions needed for DSLR video shooting, but note that there are some restrictions for live streaming purposes.
