Unfinished Identification Technology: Instagram's 'Made with AI' Tag Issue | Release #195
How would you feel if your photo suddenly got tagged as 'Made with AI'?
Many creators posting photos on Instagram are currently bewildered by this situation.
After putting in so much effort to create great works, being misunderstood as AI-generated is very disappointing. This time, we take a closer look at the issues caused by Instagram's 'Made With AI' tag and its impact.
Normal Editing Mistaken for AI-Generated Images
Eric Paré, a creator from overseas, posted a fantastic light painting photo taken at Bolivia's Uyuni Salt Flats, but it was tagged with an AI tag. Paré shared a photo of the camera's back to prove that this photo was not AI-generated.
Paré used an AI program for noise reduction in his photo, which is a normal editing process and cannot be called an 'AI-generated image'. Moreover, when he posted a screenshot, it wasn't tagged with an AI tag, indicating a problem with Instagram's AI detection system.
Inconsistencies in Instagram's AI Tagging
Instagram's AI tagging criteria are inconsistent and very vague. For example, editing a photo with Photoshop does not result in an AI tag, whereas using other editing tools does. These inconsistent errors are causing confusion among creators.
Need for Improvement in Ambiguous Standards
Meta has not clarified the criteria for applying AI tags. However, it is certain that the 'Made with AI' tag feature was added as a measure to ensure the authenticity of images.
The distinction between 'AI-generated images' and 'photographs' will continue to be a technical trial and error process. It is necessary for Instagram and other platforms to improve so that creators' works are properly evaluated. Let's look forward to future improvements.
