Time for Camera Stretching

Your camera, a partner in capturing precious moments, requires regular care to perform at its best. Simple maintenance can prolong its performance and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Maintenance time is also an opportunity to review shooting habits and improve skills. Just like people, cameras need maintenance. Think of it as a little stretch for your camera.

This time, we'll introduce easy daily camera maintenance tips for beginners.

Items Needed for Maintenance

First, gather the following items. All of these can be found at camera specialty stores like Kitamura Camera or Naniwa Camera.

  • Cleaning Cloth: A fine synthetic fiber cloth. Some are made of deerskin.
  • Blower: A tool for blowing away dust.
  • Cotton Swabs and Lens Tissue Paper: For cleaning small areas.
  • Lens Cleaner: A cleaning solution specifically for lenses.

Keep these in your camera bag for easy access to maintenance anytime. Prioritize daily maintenance.

Start with Cleaning the Lens Surface

Lenses are prone to dirt, which can affect your photos.
Apply a small amount of lens cleaner to lens tissue and gently wipe the lens. Lens cleaner can also be used for viewfinders and LCD screens. If you don't have cleaner, you can blow on the lens and wipe it, but be careful not to let saliva get on it.

Use Cotton Swabs for Small Areas

For areas that cloth or lens tissue can't reach, use cotton swabs. Makeup cotton swabs with pointed tips are particularly useful. Replace the swab with a new one when it gets dirty to avoid spreading dirt.

Blower Usage Tips: Don't Overuse

The blower is used to blow away dust from the camera's lens surface and body. However, when cleaning the inside, blowing air can accumulate dust, so it's not very suitable. Be especially careful when using it on a camera body with the lens removed. It's safer not to remove the lens in dusty environments.

During maintenance, it's common to get carried away and use the blower excessively. However, this can risk blowing dust into the camera's interior. Perform maintenance in a dust-free, calm environment.
